Hair scrunchies are both practical and trendy accessories. You can sew them yourself in no time and with very little fabric. I often use my fabric scraps to make scrunchies, giving the fabric a new burst of beauty. Here’s a quick and easy method to create a lovely scrunchie at home.
Materials needed:
Fabric (approximately 30 cm x 15 cm, depending on the desired size of the scrunchie)
Elastic (about 15 cm, depending on your wrist size)
Pins
Fabric scissors
Ruler and fabric chalk/pencil (optional, for precise measurements)
Sewing machine
Steps :
Cut the fabric
Cut a fabric rectangle that measures 30 cm long by 15 cm wide. You can adjust the dimensions based on the size of the scrunchie you want to create. For a larger scrunchie, you can increase the fabric width. The seam allowance is included.
Fold the fabric
Fold the fabric rectangle in half, right sides together, to form a long tube. Align the fabric edges carefully, then pin them in place.
Sew
Sew 1 cm from the edge. Stop about 10 cm from the end and leave a 5 cm opening to turn the fabric later. Continue sewing to the end, securing with a backstitch. Once sewn, turn the tube right side out and press it flat.
Turn one end of the tube inward until it meets the other end. Sew both ends together 1 cm from the edge, aligning the seam. Be careful not to sew through any other layers, as the seam can be delicate—take your time. Turn the entire tube right side out through the opening.
Tie a knot with the elastic or sew it
Once the elastic is properly positioned inside the tube, tie a secure knot to hold it in place, or sew the two ends together using a zigzag stitch.
Close the scrunchie
Finally, press the opening so that the seam allowance is tucked inside, then topstitch all along the edge to secure the opening that allowed you to turn the fabric.
